Hail and Wind Damage
Assessing and Repairing Storm-Damaged Roofs
Severe weather can cause significant damage to a roof in a matter of minutes. Hail can bruise or crack shingles, while strong winds can loosen, crease, lift, or remove roofing materials entirely. Damage isn’t always easy to see from the ground, and even a roof that appears intact may have problems that could lead to leaks or further deterioration.
When hailstorms, high winds, tornados, or severe thunderstorms tear through Mid-Michigan, residents trust FixRoof for thorough inspections and efficient fixes. We’ll accurately assess the condition of your roof and identify areas that need attention. We’ll then explain what we find, and provide the repairs or emergency protection needed to help restore your property.
Identifying Hail Damage
Hailstorms can cause big problems for roofs. The amount of damage from hail can vary greatly depending on the intensity of the storm and the condition of your roof. Damage from hailstrikes on shingles is often different from other types of damage. Knowing the different effects of hail damage can help you identify whether or not you have roof damage from hail. If you’re concerned, the best way to identify roof leaks or other issues is with a professional inspection.
If you have hail damage, you may notice the following:
Random damage with no pattern.
Hail hits that are black in color.
Loss of granules, which may expose the roof felt.
Asphalt and/or mat that appears shiny.
Hail hits that are soft to the touch, like the bruise on an apple.
Dents or dimpling in gutters.
Loosened bracket connections from heavy impacts.
Get an Inspection After a Storm
Don’t leave the integrity of your roof up to chance. If your building has been hit by wind or hail, schedule an inspection with roofing experts to get peace of mind.
Signs of Wind Damage
High winds can tear shingles completely off your roof, especially if there are weak points already existing. Missing shingles can lead to leaks and other interior water damage. Other wind damage may not be easy to see, especially if the adhesive seal that provides a water-shedding surface is broken. To be effective against the elements, shingles must be sealed to each other as one watertight roof deck.
Missing shingles: You’ll find spaces in your shingles or shingles that are missing completely, showing the layers underneath.
Loose shingles: Shingles might not come off the roof entirely, but loose shingles are vulnerable to further damage.
Wear lines: Thin horizontal lines where granules have been worn off. This may be about 1-2 inches beneath the shingle above.
